What is selvedge denim?

If you work in denim fashion industry, you must heard of selvedge denim. So what is selvedge denim? Do you know the history of selvedge denim?

Selvedge denim is essentially of denim fabric that woven on narrow shuttle looms. The roots of selvedge denim can back to the late 19th to early 20th century in the United States. At that time, denim wash mostly produced on the narrow shuttle looms, with 30inch wide. These machines create a tight, non-fraying edge on both side of the fabric, know as selvedge. That is practical purpose to prevent the fabric from unraveling.

Early time the selvedge were mostly in plain white, slowly some mill added different colored yarns to the edge to distinguish order from different customers or different batch.

In 1927, Levi’s collaborated with Cone Denim to use red yarn in the the selvedge for its 501jeans as iconic, along the 501jeans success and popular, people recognize it is red selvedge was a mark of quality. And other brand followed and also began adding their own unique colored selvedge to their product, creating own signature. During this period, almost all jeans featured in colored woven edges.

With industrial development, after World War II, wide-width shuttle looms rapidly gained popularity due to their high efficiency and low cost, replacing the old narrow shuttle looms. And the denim fabric became “unfinished selvage” with self-locked edge, which only need to cut and sewing in production to prevent the fraying. By the mid 20th century, the selvedge is disappared and only a few old mill have narrow shuttle looms.

However from the late 1980s, a vintage boom swept though the Japanese fashion industry. Many of Japanese brand began to replicate American vintage jeans, which included the weaving the fabric in old narrow shuttle looms with the red selvedge. And the godfather of Japanese street fashion brought the style of rolling up to show the selvedge to mainstream. This vintage craft and natural dyeing make the selvedge denim a symbol of premium quality symbol, vintage appeal and collectible value.
